I've seen some amazing graphics produced using GIMP. Gimp doesn't limp when it comes to catching up with the corporately made graphics programs. It's free.
One down side though, is you need to be able to unzip "gzip" files with the free "gzip" program... Which from what I know, is ran through DOS, and unless your a super geek, it's going to be a pain in the butt, so here's the Windows interface information for Gzip. While GIMP is pretty sweet, the gzip usability seems like it was made for the 19th century. It does have an excellent compression rate though, and it's free :)

Free 3d Modeling software like Max
I found some free software which looks like 3D STUDIO MAX and POSER. This one is free, so it's got a little bit of catching up to do, but I'm pretty sure it will surpass both of them eventually. Oh well, what am I waiting for. Here it is:
